Section 12 Induction Course specifically designed for Psychiatrists, GPs and Forensic Medical Examiners who are seeking Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act 1983 for the first time. Our course is approved by the Midlands and East of England Mental Health Act Approval Panel and therefore has recognition in all regions within England.

Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 requires that, in those cases where two medical recommendations for the compulsory admission to hospital of a mentally disordered person are required, one of the two must be made by a practitioner approved for the purposes of that Section by the Secretary of State as having special experience in the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorder.

The course is also designed to be of general interest to psychiatrists of all grades who wish to keep abreast of the current legislation as it provides the opportunity to discuss the practicalities and ethics of mental health legislation and will equip you with the essential knowledge for your day to day implementation of the Act.

This course will enable you to:

• Apply for or renew your Section 12 approval at your local Section 12 Office
• Understand the current developments in the mental health law especially the MHA and MCA
• Understand the different roles, responsibilities, processes, documentation and practicalities
• Appreciate the service user and carer perspective
• Practically apply the law to your clinical practice

Who should attend?

All doctors who wish to obtain the relevant training for MHA Section 12 Approval including Consultant Psychiatrists, General Practitioners (GPs)* and Forensic Medical Examiners (FMEs)*.

Section 12 approval

Attendance at this course is only one part of the approval process. Please contact your local Section 12 Office for full criteria for approval.  Delegates must attend the full course to be entitled to a certificate which will be accepted by your local Approvals office as proof of completion of a Section 12 Approvals training course. Delegates will be required to register at the start and close of each day in order to gain Section 12 approval and CPD points.

Accreditation

This course has been accredited by the Midlands and East of England Section 12 panel and is awarded 12 CPD hours subject to your peer group approval and in line with RCPsych guidance.
